OUR GREAT PLAINS GRASSLANDS

THE FORGOTTEN ESSENTIAL BIOME
"Anybody can love the mountains, but it takes a soul to love the prairie."
                                                                         - Willa Cather
Less than 15 million people live in The Great Plains, yet the region accounts for 42% of the land area of the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). To advocate for such a large, and primarily rural, area of land can be difficult. This has caused the grasslands of the Great Plains to become one of the most forgotten biomes in the United States.

Our Great Plains Grasslands aims to demonstrate the importance of preserving, restoring, and promoting the benefits of grasslands through education, real experiences, and various forms of action.
The map below outlines The Great Plains and the main land resource areas within that the Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) utilises for study and solution development. NRCS uses their resoirces and data to complete their mission of “delivering conservation solutions so agricultural producers can protect natural resources and feed a growing world”.

Over 80% of The Great Plains is utilized for crop or grazing land, so it is essential that organizations like NCRS work together with many landowners to create a harmonious biome that fosters the needed production and conservation.
