What's Next?
It's easy to read about the issues The great Plains Grasslands are facing, but its not so easy to know what to do next. The simplest answer is, visit any public grassland in the Great Plains you can. Numbers speak for themselves. If the interest is present, state and federal agencies are more hesitant to disturb or change these important spaces.
If you do not live near The Great Plains Region, the second best thing to do is to be vocal about the degradation of grasslands.
Follow storytellers in the Great Plains on Social Media. A great place to start is the Platte Basin Timelapse, or theprarieecologist. Your support helps them to get their message out and further promote grassland conservation.
Tell your family a fun fact you learned. Watch a documentary online or visit the website of one of the agencies in charge of reserves (ex: The Nature Conservancy).
Interest breeds importance in the eye of those who are in charge of converting grassland for development. You wouldn't build an apartment complex in the middle of an old growth forest, and building a similar attitude towards grasslands would help to protect them and build a more universal respect.
Of course, you can always donate to an organization. But your words and presence speak just as loud as the dollar.
